I keep meaning to tell Ken to change that.
The correct term is "Precedence". It is part of the Official ARRL message
preamble, and in traffic net work, indicates the order in which messages
are to be handled - Emergency first, Priority next, then finally Routine.
Precedence was not part of the SS exchange until 1966, when it was added
after the message/exchange number. All exchanges carried the R precedence
that year. IN 1968, someone at ARRL HQ apparently realized the pointlessness
of this, and changed it to indicate power levels - A for 150 W and less, or
B for over 150 W. Q was added in 1987.
