Why only 1 watt? Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of building it and it did not work properly until after it was fixed by Heathkit months later. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I do not like QRP? LOL! 73 Bob, KQ2M On 2025-09-17 11:01, John Geiger wrote: Worked JH1WIX on 15m for my first Japan. That was on 15m with 100 watts, though. Why was your HW16 limited to 1 watt? That was the first rig I ever used also, at our junior high club station.73 John AF5CC Sent from Proton Mail Android -------- Original Message -------- On 9/17/25 8:30 AM, <kq2m@kq2m.com> wrote:I became a Novice in August 1973. Using an HW-16 running 1 watt out to a 40 M dipole at ~ 15' at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, DX was hardto come by. But thankfully LU5HFI (K3ZO) and JH1WIX frequented theNovice bands back then and gave many Novices their first DX qso's. Theyoften had pileups, but persistence and learning the timing of how and when to call eventually paid off with qso's with both of them. It was only 2 months after I worked Fred, LU5HFI, when I read in a NY Times article that he had been shot and badly wounded while in Argentina. Quite a shock for a 12 year old kid. RIP my friends. Thank you for your kindness and your qso's. 73 Bob, KQ2M On 2025-09-16 20:23, W7TMT - Patrick wrote:> DX in the Novice bands? I’ll bet many of you have DS7SV in those old > logs.
