You are correct. I would say it is more challenging for any contest from
here. That said, it does not hurt that in some contests like SS just
about everyone is trying to work you...thats a curse as well at times
unless you are good at pileups which I do not profess to be. To be honest,
the best part of some of the contests is tuning around and calling in on
folks and surprising them with VY1.
As for remote operation, which I am really 'neither here nor there' on,
internet speed is not an issue. The fibre runs right by the house so speed
is not the issue. That said, just because you can do something does not
always mean you should. Part of the charm of operating here is actually
'being here'...amongst the surroundings --and the challenges.
But it is not for the faint of heart; while the cabin is very cozy, you'll
have to stoke the wood stove every few hours to keep it that way. As I
said, the only onsite costs is the modest BnB nightly rate that the manager
(my wife) won't budge on! lol...but I figure I make up for it with
delicious meals and drink. , My dear, life long friend, Bud, VA7ST has been
up the past few years and has always had a good time. He did a write up a
couple years ago in NCJ. We use the home call VY1CO but I am not averse to
anyone's call so long as it is consistent with the Regulations.
Some folks have sent some off line messages about other contests. I am
happy to entertain requests. Anyway, while this is simply a retirement
project for fun, its beginning to sound like a commercial venture which is
not the intent.
