Joseph,

If you are implying that DXlab suite is somehow less specifically because of it's "free" price, that is a mistake.  Some things are free because they cannot stand competition in the market place sufficient to command payment.  And at other (admittedly rare) times, a dedicated developer may happen to also not need the money, or the headaches that go with a business, and may choose to provide a "free" solution.

In that context, I think you are saying "I don't use DXlab or other free options, but I do use HRD and have found it to be absolutely worth the minimal cost.  And definitely would suggest it for you as well based on my personal satisfaction experience with HRD."

In this way you are being more precise in your claim, and don't inadvertently slight guys who had made a different (educated or not) decision specifically not to use HRD, nor (importantly) do you insult the developer who has spent literally years supporting the ham community on a daily basis, without once asking a user for $100 to get started, and $50 per year after, for support.

Then again, maybe I have it all wrong.  Would not be the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last.

If you can afford the 101 radios, HRD should not be a question.

Free stuff is exactly that.

I can interface HRD to anything and it automatically changes its modes while my high end modems follow suit.

Just too many great things for the Ham operators including the logbook.

Of course for the older radios, the free stuff is worth it if that is all you intend to use.

Agree. HRD has loads of sex & sizzle with a trick modern interface.  But it's a serious money pay-option.

Free option DXlab is a workhorse suite, but it's got a bit older look and feel.  The key is that it's bug free - and developer Dave is easy to reach on dedicated reflector. Frequent refinements are published and the update process is almost effortless.

I moved from HRD to DXlab back in the day (before HRD was bought by the current owners) due to an endless stream of bugs with HRD.  I'm sure it's a lot better now but I've never looked back.

Either solution for general logging is likly to satisfy.  I would agree that N1MM is a performance beast when it comes to contesting - it's what I use here as well.  But it's very very very minimalist when it comes to general logging.

well after 3 contests in a row where the 101MP and Writelog had
problems playing nice together and no solutions on the horizon, I
have decided to take a look at N1MM+ and see how it plays. I have
it installed and upgraded to latest version and the program
talking with the radio all ok so far. I see it has a general
logging program and wondering if I can open mmtty and WSJT-X at
the same time. I think I can move all 170K qso's from DX4WIN but
not sure if it would be worth it. I hate reading help files so
thought I would download the manual and print it out.... whoa...
almost 700 pages .. guess that won't happen. I would appreciate
any tips/tricks to make this easier! thanks 73's Cort K4WI
