Paul, answers below.

>> "It's 2023, but the contest is still called WRTC 2022, but it's held
concurrent with the IARU 2023 contest?"<<

The WRTCs usually are held every four years. This one was delayed a year
by Covid. Evidently the organizers chose to keep it rather than do a lot
of non-productive work, that's my guess. (Think legal incorporation,
business and bank accounts, various payment methods for donations, ogos and
merchandise, etc.)

>> "we are encouraged NOT to identify? <<

This applies only to your identifying the operators competing in the WRTC
event in Italy. You are encouraged not to identify them, should you
recognize an operator's voice or something like that. They will be
identifying themselves only by their Italian callsign. While the special
callsign block(s) will be announced before the contest, the competitors are
told their specific callsign just 15 minutes before the contest begins and
after they have surrendered all means of non-amateur radio communication,
including their personal cell phones. (The on-site referee and site manager
handle all communication, including any emergencies.) Their aqmateur
station is blocked from Internet access. The calls will be associated with
specific competitive teams only after the contest is over. So while there
are cluster spots, an on-line scoreboard, and even their logs -- this is
all handled electronically by the organizing committee and is referenced to
the Italian callsign being used. The intent is to equalize the competitive
playing field for the competitors by dampening, if not preventing, friends
and supporters from working and spotting only their friends. Theoretically
no one should know the Italian callsign of their friends until the event
ends -- they should work every station they can.

I hope this helps a little. You have to be there to fully appreciate the
effort made to ensure that the competition is as fair as possible for all
the WRTC teams from around the world. That is no easy task.

Everyone else should just get on and work the special stations and all
others pursuant to the normal IARU contest rules. Work for one of the
unique WRTC awards if that is appealing,
https://www.wrtc2022.it/en/news-11.asp?idnews=94 Watch all the live
information at the special website during the competition if that is
interesting to you. And help out by submitting your cabrillo log within the
first 6 hours after the contest so that it can be used to cross-check the
competitors' logs. Log submission link and live information during the
event is expected to be at https://tinyurl.com/yhvjx6zv but if not, go to
http://wrtc2022.it to be redirected.
