Good morning,
This update is to give you the latest status of our investigation into the
bad spots that were generated during the recent CQ WW contest. As has been
reported here and elsewhere, we have confirmed the user IP address used for
the "attack." In our opinion, this effort was either:
1) A malicious attempt by someone to disrupt the contest spotting systems
and/or create a distraction in the log checking process;
2) A spotting experiment by someone that contained software bugs resulting
in unintentional and uncontrolled spots for brief periods of time during
the contest.
In any case, we have been able to clearly segment the bad spots from the
good ones. This means that no one will be penalized for these specific
instances. Those who unfortunately choose to self-spot illegally will be
discovered as usual.
I want to thank those amongst you that invested significant time
researching this issue with us. The CQ WW Contest committee does indeed
have lots of helpers that go beyond the walls of our formal organization.
Now off to CW! Can we break 10,000 submitted logs this year?
73, John, K1AR
CQ WW Contest Director
