Maybe they needed V3 in their logs for 80 (or overall), and in their
exuberance, forgot you weren't an eligible for the contest?
Maybe they were new to SS, especially if they are recent licensees or recent
upgrades to HF?
Regardless, their problem, not yours.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] "Drafted" into SS
Put up a new inverted V for 80 today and was trying it out on the low end of
80. In the course of two hours I had quite a few callers, but 5 of them were
notable.
After giving them their 579, 589, 599, they proceeded to give me a SS exchange
despite the fact I am a V31. Do we have that many ops that don't know the
rules? I was quite surprised to have not one, but five of these guys call in.
