Every year I get a USA 1x1 special event call, usually W1W, which I use for a
week of general operating in support of a local festival.  I also use it in the
New England QP where it has worked well.  On occasion I've used 1x1 calls in
other contests with less satisfactory results.  In the XE-RTTY it works fine,
but not in the CQ-WPX-RTTY a week later.  This surprised me as I thought RTTY
would less likely to be a problem.

This year I was one of the 13 Colonies ops, using K2H for MA.  That worked well
because most ops know the event and expect the 1x1 calls.

Throughout the world most SE calls are longer than usual, which is its own
problem.  But  usually people expect unusual or special calls to be normal
length or longer.  When people encounter an unusually short call, they think
something is missing.

My recommendation in any international contest is to use the V31XX call.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Call sign choice

Quick question...
I have the call V31XX, but am allowed to use V3X for the CQWW contest.  I tried
the call out last night in the Sprint with mixed results.  Although the call is
shorter, quite a few guys struggled to get the call right.  Some wanted to make
me a VE3, others added stuff to the suffix, etc.
Given a choice which call would you use?  Any comments are welcome.
