For some reason, I had assumed that this was a one time add for COVID.  Looking
at the original announcement, this does not appear to be the case.  So I would
assume it is here to stay.

My mind and heart disagree on this.  I'm connected enough with Millennials and
younger to know that the future of this game is probably along the line of what
the RHR folks are building.  Individuals and teams choosing remote operating
locations strategically for each contest, and streaming to Twitch during the
contests, with an ownership entity maintaining the infrastructure.  Basically,
another eSport with the added randomness of RF and propagation.  In addition to
RHR, there will be others trying to monetize it.

Personally, not my cuppa.  For me, to use an old fashioned term, the
"fellowship" of in person multi op teams is a huge part of the appeal.  For
right now, the Distributed M/M have their own unique little slice of the pie.
They compete against each other, and to be blunt, at least for now, most of us
won't be comparing our scores to theirs.  I don't think it much matters whether
one works WW1X or K3LR on six bands.  Successful multi ops of any category,
always maximize their band presence.  I also have to give the RHR folks credit.
They've got remote keying down.  The majority of remote ops are painful to
work, at least some of the time.

What will be interesting now is to see whether it is adopted for CQWW.

The big difference will be travel time and travel expenses and no reason to
build a big M/M station you hear just a few times during the year.

Any station you worked six times is just taking up spectrum in your opinion,
bur there might be others who still want a qso with it.

The M/M D offers interesting challenges, technical and organizational, to
which the various groups responded very well.
Does it make things better for the rest of us? I doubt it.
What we need are lots of stations to work. Once you're worked WW1X six times
(i.e. on six bands, as I did as NO8DX). they're just taking up spectrum. OK,
maybe they can serve a useful function as beacons CQing on a dead band. But
it's still better to have three or six or more callsigns active, giving the
rest of us more potential QSOs.
I think the useful function of providing top notch remote operation
availability, in particular to the youth crowd, is a fine contribution. But
that can be done with traditional single site multi-op efforts. I don't see
where the distributed feature adds much.
