As a devotee of the 24-hour "classic" category in CQWW, I think a 12-hour
category for SS would make it much more enjoyable.

I agree. Not every contest has to be a callsign copying competition.
Not every contest has to be a massive multiplier move fest. Not every
contest has to have the 10-Q meter pegged at 240 for the majority of the
contest. I get that participation is down in Sweeps CW - I mentioned as
much myself in the discussion that took place in November and December.
But, viable fixes were proposed to that which 1) do not fundamentally
change the nature of the contest, 2) do not continue to skew
participation towards one geographic area over others, and 3) provide
incentive to new operators.
Its clear that folks are NOT bothered by the exchange - as seen with
Phone Sweeps.

One of the things that I would never vote for with SS would be changing
the exchange. It is what makes it unique and different and has a ton of
history behind it. As other have said there is a no copying skill contest
nearly every other weekend, go try those.

I LOVE SS BECAUSE of the LONG EXCHANGE!
It's not some simple brain dead 59 bla bla exchange that the anti
contesters just love to make fun of.
But I know I'm different! I also liked the old Novice Roundup that lasted
TEN DAYS!
The old Novice Roundup required you to learn and understand propagation.
It was NOT just brute force get on and make contacts. You had to decide
WHEN to get on. And on what bands.
Is getting on at 3 AM Tuesday morning a good time? Or is a Saturday
afternoon at 3 PM Better? Say, You still need Mainly seven land
multipliers, what time and what band will give the greatest chance for
propagation into seven land for you and your station!
A contest that has strategy not just brute force would be really cool!
I really never had gotten the feelings of the Sunday doldrums in SS.
But of course, I have done also many a VHF/UHF contests. Where on Sunday
one QSO a Hour is great!

Do we know why there are fewer new contesters doing the SS than other
contests? Maybe the long exchange? Any other things turning off new
licensees from this contest?

I think that SS has a number of fundamental issues in todays contesting
environment. Not sure that changing the start and end times changes
it.
It seems that virtually all of the participants have been doing SS for
decades and very few new people are adding in.
If the people that do it every year want changes, great. But I think
that
the notion it makes SS less slow on Sunday, or increases participation
are
misguided.
The concept of allowing more than one QSO per band has merit to me, but
I
have never been an SS fan due to the SLOW 50% of the contest.
