I am not doing anything other than giving an opinion. The contest folks
make the rules.
That might help expose those claiming unassisted though.......Tell them
to turn their antenna and the do and work you and then claim not using
packet or a host of other online chat resources.

Mike,
Does it mean that you narrow the meaning of self spotting to runners
only. Therefore when doing S&P , I hear needed mult and have
difficulties to get him, I can send a spot with comment " Turn you
antenna towards me, I need you for mult. May be you need me for mult
as well. Or at least I will give you 3 points instead of 1 pointers
you work now"
Who knows if the op will see this spot. But if he will, he should have
less difficulties to understand its meaning.

That is not self spotting. I spot lots of things that I don't work
or can't work or stations I already worked in contests and outside
contests. Who knows if the op will see and understand the meaning of
your spot.
Self spotting is you trying to run on a freq and using your call or
another call to spot that frequency so people can find you.

As you may know we have all sorts of issues in this part of the
world with
getting people to turn their beams in a contest.
So if I come across a station calling CQ who clearly cannot hear me,
is it
OK to spot him saying ZL can hear you? Would it make a difference
if, being
in a multi-op, the spot comes from my personal callsign and not the
multi-op callsign?
My feeling is if the spot doesn't come from the station callsign and
doesn't mention the station callsign,it can't be considered self
spotting
as the DX station won't know the callsign which wants to work him
(although
he might assume it is the one spotting him).
Thoughts?
