The example can be read to say the call MUST be part of the exchange, but
usually, "for example" introduces an optional construct of something. (In
Paris, there are lots of things to do, for example, you could visit the Louvre.
But you don't have to visit the Louvre.)
Obviously you need to get the call, but do you really need to get it twice if
you copied it fine the first time?
The rules do not say you must send nr pr call ck sec in order, but the example
shows one way of doing it. That's how we're set up. But it's just our
preference.
In fact, the rules don't say you must get them in one contiguous stream: if
you're struggling to work a non contester, it's OK to get it in bits and
pieces. It's OK to prompt him; OK, how much power? Good. What year did you get
your license?, Do you know your ARRL section?, etc. (Obviously more likely on
phone.)
In any case, it's far from something to get worked up over; if you got the
guy's call, you got it. If you want to read it to say MUST, or if you want to
read it as an optional construct, either way, you'll get no argument from me.
There are other things in contesting to worry more about.
