More experienced people than I have chimed in, but FWIW, if your circumstances
dictate one wire antenna, I'd consider a fan dipole if contesting were your
focus, or either a Carolina Windom or a classic ladder line fed doublet for
more general use.
But really, that's more a default / starting point answer. Depending on what
you have to work with, there are likely better options to consiser

I'm a fairly serious but second-tier contester who's getting old, and we
have just moved to Baltimore County, MD for family medical reasons.
Tower and antenna rules here are pretty reasonable, but I have other
constraintswhich will pretty much limit me to one antenna, and probably
to wires. I'd still like to play in Sweepstakes and dabble in DX
contests. Given the state of the sunspot cycle, a lot of that is likely
to be on the lower bands.
So, if you were in my shoes, what would you put up?
