Use crisp calls. If I'm doing search/pounce I blow right by anyone
making long calls or waiting long periods between calls. During peak
periods it's typically faster (and much less annoying) to go find
somebody else than it is to wade through a slow operator. I'll chase
weak stations, because even big stations can sound weak if conditions
are poor, but I won't bother with a slow runner unless everything else
has dried up. In a contest, I'm not there to make friends.
In my opinion, operating technique is more important than the strength
of your signal.
