In the old days, the code or rule for telegraphers was COPY WHAT IS SENT.
That included not changing msg text regardless of whatever the op may know
outside of the text and includes the chance of his error which,
nevertheless, he writes just what he copied.

To me, that is the origin of contesting... to copy what is sent.  If the op
makes a mistake copying, too bad for the score;  his mistake should show up
and he should suffer for it.

Remember when even hams were prevented by law from divulging any info
copied from the radio?  It gave news guys with scanners fits, too.
