Dear all hams,
Contesting has many positive and rewarding aspects. Let me list some...
-increases your ability to copy simple but exacting information in a highly
orderly way (good brain training).
-encourages you to make a better station, learn about how to do that, and
enjoy doing changes.
-gives a harmless outlet to your normal competitive personality qualities.
-gives chance to measure your performance over years of contesting.
-allows you to Elmer others in contesting.
-can be enjoyed by beginner and old timer alike.
-can follow a ham through his whole life with enjoyment at all ages
possible.
-extends the regular ham feeling of brotherhood to an inner circle of
enthusiasts with your specific interest.
-offers opportunity to practice resisting temptation to cheat at an
activity that you are unlikely to be caught.
The latter entry is especially important in building a strong personal
character based on honesty and integrity. However, the benefits to the
shaping of a good personality are a highlight as is the push to learn new
things and to learn to push yourself in a balanced way toward a goal.
Because you did not ask, I will not deal with negative qualities. However,
the way mankind advances to better ways is to look honestly and
dispassionately at systems, see the pro and con of them, and then work
toward making the systems better based on knowledgable critiques. Dealing
with such critiques allows even the timid or the heated head to adjust to
good change in the spirit of reason over a dislike of messengers, for
example.
