On phone, do you also use a similar marker to indicate what follows, as in for
example, "Please copy..." or some other such marker?

It's a historical artifact. And it serves as a familiar marker to indicate
the important part of the exchange will be coming next. :)
Do a contest some time that doesn't include the 599 and you immediately
realize how useful it is!

Serious question: why was '599' part of the exchange? The larger question
is: why is '599' ever a part of any contest's exchange?
