I'm logging every QSO regardless is it dupe or not when I am calling CQ. You
can never be sure was the station calling you or someone else close to your
frequency. I often must to play with rit knob to copy the station calling me
even when I use 500Hz filter on CW so you never know what is you potential
correpondent looking for in overcrouded bands. Number of years I have used TR
software and switched off dupes restriction in menu on CQ. Now I am using
WinTest which allow me to log dupes. Same situation is on SSB as well - all we
are humans and sometimes lets say simple typing error occures... Or the station
you can hear calling another station you don't hear, but on the same
frequency... But all duplicated contacts are marked in the final logs with no
points credit for QSO so I don't see any criminal in this situation. The only
thing is you are losing the time for those QSOs and sometimes it is pitty to
see lets say 70-80 dupes in the contest because you can understand you
simply lost around one hour overall in the contest. But that is the life. And
PC+software made this problem very light. So "QSO B4" is out from my
transmitting texts...
But there is another problem I'd like to pay attention. Sometimes I
transmitting the correspondent call (even when I am not sure I have it correct)
+ number and I am receiving simple "roger" + number. But when I am asking to
confirm the call I am finding out that real call is a bit different from the
call we starting the QSO. And if I will not ask to repeat the call -
correspondent will not correct it... So what we have in this situation? Unique
calls, mistakes, possible deductions, possility to duplicate the QSO and so on.
The question is - what can we do to ask the correspondents to pay more
attention for QSO qaulity? And no different - is it a contest runner or a
simple hunter for something he is looking for...
Thank for your time to read this.

Wow -- I just checked and the software I've been using for a couple of years
now will NOT allow me to log a dupe. And, there is no way to turn that
behavior off. It simply will not allow entry of a dupe.
The author suggests changing the call sign by adding an additional character
(such as a question mark) and then going back and deleting one or the other
from the log. Which I am not going to do.. So, I guess it's time to look for
something else to use for logging. Do most contest software packages allow
logging dupes?
