I fully agree with the notion that good band conditions are great for fighting
operator fatigue.... Adrenaline pushing its way through your veins while
running a pileup is a good way to stay awake! Endlessly pushing the computer's
"Call CQ" button on a dead band is not.....

My shack came equipped with pot fixtures in the ceiling with 65 watt halogen
lamps with large frosted diffusers in front when I moved in. As it turns out
there's a fixture about 2 ft off each end of my operating table and the light
they give is perfect: bright, very few shadows and no glare off monitors and
other displays.
I don't see any benefit for submarine style lighting unless you do the whole
house that way. Best to match the lighting levels in the rest of the house,
that way there's no adjustment necessary when moving from room to room.
As for fatigue, I think a comfortable chair, coffee, regular (brief) breaks and
good band conditions are all that's needed to overcome it!!
