In the for what it's worth category about bugs and keying,
back in 1963, I was the examiner of the U.S. Navy's
Speed Key License tests in Norfolk.

Most of the candidates initially flunked because
(not having read the rules carefully),
they could not send 18 wpm on a straight key,
and that was a pre-condition to taking the speed key license test.

I'd loan them a straight key and code oscillator and send them to
the aceyducey club for lunch, and they usually came back
ready for that part.

Then, they would flunk because they couldn't send 20 wpm
text with their dots setting slowed down; a maximum of
18 dots in one second was permitted, but many had their
bugs set to twice that rate.
