Yuri,
you mentioned WAE DC. The Contest that abandoned unassisted category
several years ago and even decided not to mention in the future those
operating with out of assistance in the final results.
Well, I think the organisers made big mistake, the contest popularity is
going down very fast now. Although it used to be one of my favourit contests
and I have entered WAEDC CW 25 times since 1974 until 2004, operating in
various groups,
e.g. SO, SWL, M/S, M/M including 8 first finishes, WAE DC SSB 21 times in
the same period, the year 2004 was my last year in the WAE DC! And I know,
I'm not alone making couple weekends a year free for fishing after WAE DC
Committee simplified their lives by putting everyone in to one big pot.
As I can see you and some others mixing up two very different things.
For me is absolutelly clear - ASSISTED means that you are not SINGLE
OPERATOR ("just a boy and his radios"., as K0HB said), you getting huge
support from hundreds operators around.
Recently I made analysis of all SO SB logs (nearly 160 logs that were
members
of Top boxes in CQ WW DX 2006 CW Contest ) and learned lot of interesting
things
for me. Even with out of very deap analysis I found there 15 logs that even
first quick look allows me to make serious suspicions on 15 participants
that
claimed they were UNASSISTED, but I think they were violating the rules.
For me is hard to understand, why people do not state true in their logs if
they using packet cluster, receiving assistance? It' very simple, diferently
from
the WAE DC, CQ World Wide Contest has different categories of entry -
UNASSISTED
and ASSISTED. Why they cheating? I think because in many cases they feel
that they are not top class operators, they can not compeate on equal level.
Well, luckily we can recognize those packet cheaters now after CQ WW logs
were opened for the public.
If you would compare two logs from the same country,
SN7Q ( http://cqww.com/cwlogs/sn7q/ ) and
SN2B ( http://cqww.com/cwlogs/sn2b/ ) for example,
you will see that SN7Q operating single band 80m had to think constantly
about contest tactics, when to RUN and when to S/P, how to operate to work
all those multipliers etc, while SN2B operation is totaly brainless - More
and More
power to hold the frequency and quick jumps out from CQ QRG to make those
just spotted multiplier and QSO's clearing the band map. Unfortunatelly,
SN2B is not alone in promotion of that kind of rude contesting. Sorry to
say, but my lithuanian felow contester LY2IJ was using absolutelly the same,
as said rude
and brainless, tactics to "win" the contest, to earn the plaques. I'll
provide
LY2IJ logs analysis (as well as other suspicious logs) later if some one
interesting.
I doubt the young operators, that just entering radio sport, would found
interesting and challenging such kind of operation, I doubt many of them
would
remain in the hobby if UNASSISTED categories would be amended. Especially in
Single Band categories. The cheating from the veterans would kill them at
the very early beggining. Therefore We have to do everything possible to
prevent
cheating in radiosport (I'm not making appeal to those saying "this is just
the hobby"). I congratulate Contest committee's decision to open the logs, I
would
strongly support sugestions to open the logs before final results are out,
maybe
couple months after the dead line, I would support sugestion to enter exact
QRG of the QSO's in to the log for those pretending for the Top Six/Ten. I
can assure
those telling that their rig/pc combination does not allow to log exact
frequency, there is not big deal to write them down on the specially
prepared
tables on peace of paper with the later possibility to enter it manually in
to
Cabrillo log afterwards. I did this myself two times while operating with
lot
of searh and pounce in high rates contest EU HF Championship. I think this
is
very easy to do in Single Band entries, where people spends 90 % of time
calling CQ on one QRG. I would congratulate if suggestions, we heard here on
contesting.com reflector to take audio of entire contest on the disk would
be
accepted as the must by contest committee for those pretending to the Tops
or
plaques. I do not record contests myself, but I'm sure if the contest rules
would be changes that way, I, as well as many other contesters, would find
the
way and money how to realise it.
Now let's to make little analysis on the SN2B CQ WW DX 2006 CW log.
I have send this analysis to Bob, K3EST, but did not get any answer...
Therefore I leave it for You contestersto deside if He deserves to be
honored
by receiving plaque in CQ WW DX SSB contest, or if he deserves to be DQ'ed
from the results.

SN2B CQ WW DX 2006 CW:
- changed CQ QRG only 10 times during entire contest, including returning
on the air after the sleeping times.
- 80 QSO out of 1600 (5%) were made with help of packet cluster
- 18 DXCC mult out of 105 (17.1%) were made with the help of packet cluster
- 80 % of packet spots were grabbed in 10 minutes range.
- 91 % of packet spots were grabbed in 20 minutes range.
- not more than 25 QSO (only 1.5 %) were made with REAL S/P

Besides this example is very strong evidence in accusing SN2B by packet
cheating,
this example proves my early thoughts that packet cluster stimulates rude
and
brainless operating in the contests (at least in single band categories).
Therefore please leave for us UNASSISTED category, and you guys, some times
looking at the packet screens, do not hesistate to show in your logs you
were
operating ASSISTED category.
