I wonder why in this case W9SZ would go and look at the log?

I don't see it as a mistake.  DXpedition A works W9SG on CW but logs it as
W9SZ.  W9SZ goes and looks at the complete logs, sees all the QSO info there
and sends for a card which is issued by the DXpedition QSL manager.
