Thanks for the replies. I had neglected to mention that I know that VE2's are
in several Zones. I just thought that maybe the absolute-latest cty.dat file
had them sorted out. Of course, even that might not help with portable
operations.
There is no need to mention which VE2 I worked. I was NOT trying to determine
his actual Zone; I'll submit my little log with the as-copied data. (I had not
even wanted to mention his call because I did not want to tempt anybody else
into "correcting" their log after the 'Test.) As a sidelight, this is just
another reminder to copy what is sent, rather than relying on the software (or
the packet spots).
I wanted only to address how the log checkers (or their software) handle the
issue, and so far I have not seen a definitive answer to the question:
If the guy sends the wrong Zone (and I presume that you should log what was
sent; and that the log checkers know what the guy sent and know his actual
Zone), for what Zone will you be given credit? If you get credit for the
actual Zone, would it count as a mult? (And what if the checkers know that he
was not in the Zone that he sent -- maybe a unique mult for you -- but they do
not know the actual Zone?)
Related question #1: How do you protect yourself in the log checking if the
guy's country and Zone do not match?
Related question #2: How would ARRL's log checking handle a guy who sent wrong
Section in SS? (Big Guns who always get called by two or three of every
Section need not be concerned if the guy knows whether he was in, e.g., ORG or
SDG, or in SB or LAX; or in ENY or NNY.)
Related question #3: I think the question applies also to IARU 'Test; are
there any other 'Tests where the guy sends a location indicator that similary
affects your score? (Extreme hypothetical example: in ARRL DX, a W3 on MD's
Eastern Shore decides that he can increase his score by claiming to be in DEL,
thus tricking lots of DX into calling him.) How does the log checking for
those 'Tests handle the problem?
