I think I remember N6TR saying that he is now using reed relays, such as those available from Radio Shack, for keying and other on-off functions. One side of the coil goes to a source of 12vdc, and the bottom side of the coil goes to the collector of a 2n2222, whose base is driven by the usual 1K resistor. A reverse diode across the coil is probably a good idea.
