There is a related discussion ongoing on another mailing list and an
interesting problem was brought up. It is especially pertinent to
contesting. Apparently some of these USB to Serial adapters don't know what
comm port they are and could be anything, at any time, from 1 to 8. During a
contest, for example, if I press the F-4 key I want my call to be sent, I
don't want to sit around waiting for the adapter to figure what it is. Has
this been a problem and if so is there an easy solution. Can the Windows
device manager be used to limit the comm ports?
Thanks in advance

Subject: [CQ-Contest] USB to multiple serial port adapter?
It wasn't enough that lightning trashed my station last month.
Yesterday, my desktop PC died.
Rather than replacing it, I'm thinking of putting my laptop into service
as the shack computer. Naturally, it has no serial ports, so I wonder
if there is a reliable USB to multiple serial port device that will work
with the radio, Writelog, etc.
Tnx,
Barry
