Same experience here. I've run a home network of more than 10 computers
through iterations of Windows for workgroups through the years up thru XP
Pro. I bought Windows Vista Ultimate and had sorry experiences just to get
it working properly as a good neighbor in the network, not to mention the
huge list of programs and hardware that aren't ready for it. VISTA itself
seems like a good evolution but Microsoft is like the huge battleship that
has to drag a giant flotilla of flotsam and junk along with it everywhere it
goes. And some of those old programs and drivers were poorly designed and
written in the first place. I now have two tablet PC's for the kids (which
replaced their old HP notebooks with XP), both with VISTA, and they are now
working peacefully within the network. It seems that new hardware with
software and drivers engineered for VISTA seem to work OK, but upgrading old
systems is a frightening workload of many hours of effort.

I have to give credit to Apple at this point since they jealously guarded
their hardware/software domain for so long and just continued to refine
their software. In my opinion, now that they are moving to the Intel
platform, they now have a huge advantage over Microsoft since they are free
to move forward without having to drag half the world with them. I'm not an
Apple fan, but I did break down and get two of their excellent iBooks and a
MAC. Sold the iBooks and got the tablets since the kids didn't make the
jump too well. The Apple OS is not a techies delight since it takes a huge
effort to get inside their OS and make it behave properly. Now where o
where is that wonderful registry?

And now with the iPhone as the 3rd leg of their technology, Apple's future
looks pretty good. The XYL just bought three iPhones for herself and the
kids and I must admit they are pretty spectacular devices. A lot of
software design went into them. They tried to convince me to make the jump,
but my clunky old PDA/Cell phone that I've used for 4 years still works
fine.

My 2 cents.
