Hello,
half-distances should stimulate additional activity from those formerly
below the thresold and prevent cannibalizing activity from those
formerly operating longer than the thresold to invent. For finding the
best compromise it could be helpful to know more about real operation
patterns in the time range +/- 6 hours arond the mark. Having the logs
available would not only allow for calculating the operation times but
also the pattern, i.e. how many do/can operate longer continous periods.
My assumption is that everydaylife in this group of hams leads to a
regular change between operating intervals and weekend-duty-breaks (with
many examples to be found at 3830).
From the earlier quoted count through RDXC time-figures here the
hourwise distribution of real operation times around the halftime-mark
in this 24-hour-contest:
(based on claimed scores of non-UA-allband operators in 2006 having
submitted a log)
Hours Ops %
20-24 101 11,1%
19-20 23 2,6 %
18-19 13 1,5 %
17-18 15 1,7 %
16-17 23 2,6 %
15-16 32 3,6 %
14-15 30 3,4 %
13-14 29 3,3 %
12-13 29 3,3 %
11-12 38 4,3 %
10-11 42 4,7 %
9-10 45 5,0 %
8-9 43 4,8 %
7-8 42 4,7 %
6-7 54 6,1 %
5-6 65 7,3 %
4-5 65 7,3 %
0-4 203 22,8 %
The group of potential "reducers" with a 12-hour-category may be seen in
those operating 12-18 hours. They make up for 158 operators (17,9 %).
The potential "increasers" may be found among those operating 6-12
hours: 264 hams (29,6 %).
With the actual lively discussion I guess I wouldn´t be the only
volounteer to look at other figures to be derived from other contests.
About the fear of cheap plaques in a half-distance-category possibly won
by the so intensively described whiners - here the best claimed scores
from US SOAB-HP at 3830 in WWDX CW with op-times shorter than 28 hours:
W1UK 1595 130 426 23 2,570,944 YCCC
K1NQ 1265 117 364 27 1,718,613 YCCC
W1CSM 1010 119 364 27 1,372,686 YCCC
AA4V 822 117 336 13 1,049,148 Carolinas DX Assn
K1JB 722 119 367 16 987,552 YCCC
K4RO 877 115 291 20 960,190 TCG
No easy wins in sight.
Thanks for reading and best 73, Chris
