the first digit of the s/n is the last digit of the year of manufacture. The
next character, always a letter, represents the month of manufacture where "C"
= January (go figure, it must be some special Japanese thing). The next two
digits represent the manufacturing lot, and the last four are the radio number
within the lot. So my ft1000MP has the s/n 7L230060 which translates as
October of 1997 manufacture, it was in lot #23 and was the 60th radio in that
lot.
