I feel as if I just entered the twi-lite zone. The first time this question was
asked somewhere around 1986 by Jim, W6YA.
The answer then is the same as it is today. It is perfectly legal but it leads
to to many questions/accusations that it is not worth it in the long run.

OK, so let's turn this thread into something a bit more positive. It
is rather clear that receiving and using spots during a contest puts
an SO into the assisted category. It is also now clear that asking
others to spot you does the same (and is illegal anyway). It should
also be clear that an SO benefitting from incidental spots still
continues as an SO (non-assisted).
How about going the other way? Can an SO post spots to the spotting
system without having to be in the assisted category? The station
isn't getting any benefit from the spots, although his fellow club
members probably are. It is relatively easy to turn off received
spots in most logging programs while still allowing outgoing spots.
So why would one do this? Specifically to help fellow club members
who _are_ running SOA or multi.
So, illegal or not? And secondly, good or bad form?
