Look at this way: Could LoTW be simplified and still be secure? Yes, 
absolutely.

All that should be necessary to upload a log is to go the LoTW website, 
login with your previously established username and password and upload an 
ADIF file. All the other hoops one has to jump through are not really 
needed. So why not simplify?

I'll point out one more time that banks handle financial transactions with 
nothing more than the above. You can bet if there were security issues, the 
banks would implement more strenuous security measures in a heartbeat. If 
this kind of authentication is good enough for financial transactions, it 
should be good enough for LoTW, don't you think?
