Rusty somewhere in this 'thread' there was an opinion from someone associated
with the ARRL who said something like if you don't remember make your best
guess. Then be consistent with that number.

Subject: Re: [CQ-Contest] SS Rules
Mal, due to various conflicts, I have not been able to play in SS for a long
time. I do plan to before long. But, following this thread, I have a real
problem. I don't know what year I was first licensed. Do you have any
advice for me that will not cause me to be DQed if I guess wrong and someone
is able to find out that my check "should" have been the other year? I
suppose I could send 58/59, but that would only cause extra confusion, I
would think.
Or are those of us who have changed callsigns over the years supposed to use
the year we first received our current license? In my case that would mean
I would be using 99 for my check rather than 58 or 59, and therefore in some
circles would mean it would not be nearly as "prestigeous" a check. (That
couldn't be an issue here, could it?)
Original call was kn5ucv. Maybe you have a more sophisticated way to check
it out.
I did try qrz.com as well as a couple of other lookups, including the FCC,
and could not come up with anything.
Thanks es 73,
Rusty, na5tr

Kelly here's the fly in your ointment. Contrary to popular belief there is
only one station license assigned. In other words at this QTH N7MAL is the
station license and any and all transmissions from this location are
identified as N7MAL regardless of who is at the mic. Therefore the Check
will
always be 57 because that is the Check of N7MAL, the station licensee. Our
FCC rules regarding this subject are not ambiguous even though, especially
during contests, they are frequently violated. ARRL contest rules do not
supercede FCC rules.

This rule is hardly without ambiguity. It doesn't specify if the person it
is speaking to is the guy in the chair or the guy who owns the station. It's
further confused by the fact that there's no requirement to use the owner's
callsign (hence the @call listings). That it's ambiguous doesn't mean the
door is wide open, as N1ND's note says. But it does mean we can't be
surprised if checks change.
My gut on this says that if this is the most important complaint about SS,
people are working way too hard to find things to complain about.
Our responsibility is to interpret and log what was sent. It's not our
responsibility to sweat over whether it's what was sent last year. That it
may change is a good thing. Keeps us on our toes.

Subject: [CQ-Contest] SS Rules
Sweepstakes rule:
4.4. Check (the last two digits of the year you were first licensed);
I worked a station, during ss phone, who I have known for many years. The
station is an above average station and frequently has guest ops and even
multi efforts. When the op sent the check it was 30+ years off. I didn't
challenge it because they were doing a serious, very serious, effort and I
was just giving out points.
My question is: Are the rules really rules or just guidelines we can all
bend and twist to suit our individual purposes?
