I agree, George. Your method is what I use.
Also, if the frequency is in use and you still don't hear anything,
then it's me (To paraphrase that old country-western classic: "If your
phone's not ringing, it's me not calling")
By your second CQ string, though, I will have resumed S&P'ing until I
find another 'quiet' freq.
