To evaluate these numbers try this approach. Use w3lpl as a standard.
assume he is running two stations on each band and is spotting
everything they hear fairly regularly. Then look at the stations he
spotted, note that they are stations you would (on the east coast)
expect to be beacons on the bands out of europe or the carribbean...
they got around 20 spots each.
assuming that w3lpl's crew is unbiased this is probably a good gauge of
how often one station would likely spot any one other station in the 48
hour period on all the bands.

it is interesting to look at all the spots for iz5cml... most are from
ed7zab-5 node, and a few from others... the list includes spots from:
K1QGG, K9LON, K5LGH, K7UJI, WA3DFT - not in latest buckmaster list
KC1ECF - not issued yet

more interesting are spots for kp2a. many were made from n5in's node...
a nice pick to fake spot from as i can get ip's directly from there.
what really catches the eye on these is that i know many of the
spotters, and they have their own nodes, so why would they spot from
n5in's node? a look at ip addresses tells the story:

the ip belongs to:

it looks like kp4cpd and w8tk/7 are just good cheerleaders.

Now ugly statistics about single spotter spots. These are spots from
people that made only one spot the whole weekend. There are two sources
of these, the cluster network and dxsummit. An interesting check is the
percentage of spots for stations from each of these sources.

DX total all dxsummit
                spots singles singles
XF4IH 279 65(23%) 20(7%)
5V7C 185 28(15%) 4(2%)
LY4A 113 44(39%) 0(0%)
HR5/OH3JF 105 15(14%) 2(2%)
5W0SB 102 22(22%) 6(6%)
VK9NB 86 30(34%) 10(12%)
3D2ZF 73 13(18%) 3(4%)
PY4RGS 72 24(33%) 0(0%)
HG3M 60 28(47%) 7(12%)
EA1WS 50 12(24%) 12(24%)

the interesting ones here are the ones with higher percentages but fewer
total spots. some of these are explainable by being rare or non-contest
operations that attract dxers rather than contesters who are less likely
to make spots during the contest.

more details on single spotter spots(note that k1ttt-14 spots are really
those that i got from dxsummit):

an interesting array of stateside spotters from oz5bbs including several
calls not in my latest buckmaster. i didn't check them all, i'll leave
that as an exercise for the log checkers. if anyone can get oz5bbs's ip
logs for those stations they would likely be very interesting also.

i hate to sound paranoid, but i am sure i have not made any friends by
publishing this data. So I probably shouldn't be surprised if more stuff
like the spots below show up in the future:

also found in undisguised self spot list:
Dx FromNode Freq
K1TTT YV6BTF-7 21337

other spots from yv6btf-7 node during the contest were(note that besides
a couple test spots made by the sysop this was ALL the spots from that
node that made it to my node):
Dx Freq Comment Spotter DTS
KP4KE 14323.1 PUERTO RICO LU4AA 3/7/2004 23:12:00

KP4KE 14325.6 PUERTO RICO LU4AA 3/7/2004 23:37:00
I have requested ip address info for these users from yv6btf, but i'm
not sure if the dxnet software records that information. if anyone
knows him or that software could you help?

one other interesting spot that showed up was:
Dx Freq Spotter FromNode DTS
K1TTT 21300 KB2HBK AA2MF 3/6/2004 13:57:00
this one was interesting for several reasons. first, we were not on
that frequency at that time. second the spotter has been identified in
the past as being a fake spotter call used to spot ny6dx. third, ny6dx
was operating at aa2mf's station using nn2w(aa2mf's club call) over the
weekend. i have requested but not yet received the ip address used by
kb2hbk and also KLTTT-13 who were seen on aa2mf's node.
