I thought NYC was created in 1899. Otherwise, no issues. I
was born and raised in NYC (Queens) but left in 1975.
There's lots of people wanting to secede. Folks in western
Kansas want to be part of Colorado; NYC wants to be a state
unto itself so its taxes will stay in the city and not go to
Albany; Staten Island wants to be part of NJ. Connecticut
claimed part of Pennsylvania until the early 1800's!
Oh, well.

The NYC Borough names given by K5RC are actually the county
names. The
county names are only important as regards court system
administration and
for the entry on your tax return (and for county hunters).
Here is the
translation between Borough names and County names (both are
official):
Borough of Manhattan: New York County
Borough of the Bronx: Bronx County
Borough of Brooklyn: Kings County
Borough of Queens: Queens County
Borough of Staten Island: Richmond County
The former Borough of Richmond (located geographically on
Staten Island) was
renamed the Borough of Staten Island in 1975. It has always
been Richmond
County as well, at least since well before NYC Unification
in 1898. To find
a Borough of Richmond, you must go to London.
The Bronx is named for Jonas Bronck, a Swedish seafarer by
way of the
Netherlands, who settled in the Bronx in 1639. There was a
"Bronck's River"
well before a name was needed for the entire area; the use
of "the" is a
remnant of the connection with the name of the river. The
Bronx is ALWAYS
referred to with "the".
The ARRL Section "NLI" consists of seven counties: New York
City, plus
Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. Long Island is
118 miles long;
the furthest point, Montauk Point, is almost directly south
of the
Connecticut-Rhode Island border. Many residents of the
eastern part of
Suffolk County have been agitating for years to secede from
Suffolk County
and form a new county, which would probably be called
Peconic County and
would be the 63rd county in New York State.
Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties, plus Queens and
Brooklyn) is
NA-026 for the IOTA program. Manhattan and Staten Islands
do not meet the
IOTA qualifications for "islands". The Bronx is
geographically part of the
mainland.
