With respect to Father Neiger's retirement plans for his
bubble gum investment:
My wife teaches special ed children. Many have attention-deficit
issues. When it comes time for standard testing, she makes a point
of giving them (sugarless) gum to chew on. Tends to keep them in
their seats and concentrating, by providing a path for excess energy.
Test scores go up. Peggy got a kick out of Jim's description, but says
it's absolutely true.
Without engaging in speculation about our collective early-childhood
development, let me merely observe that some of us have shown difficulty
walking and chewing gum. So it naturally follows that chewing tends to
keep you in the chair!
