Hi Marty,
I do the same thing you described - putting out spots to help
out my friends. Most people don't have a problem with this. I think
what Scott's concern is that TO5T (which was at the FM5BH station) was
self-spotting HIMSELF on the packet network, which the majority of
contesters feel is unethical.
The problem we have with the WPX rules is they are not clear on the
subject of if a multi-op entry can spot themselves. The rules clearly
say that an assisted single op entry cannot self-spot but says nothing
about the multi-op categories. My guess is the TO5T group interpreted
the rules as allowing them to self-spot themselves. Because the rules
are unclear about this there is no reason for TO5T to be DQ'ed.
I think ALL the contest sponsors need to review their rules to make
sure there is nothing ambiguous about them. They also need to crackdown
on groups which try to gain an advantage by using non radio means
to gain a small advantage. I wish packet would just go away and not be
allowed for use in contests.... Don't you just just love those packet
pileups?? No, unless you are on the recieving end.... Unfortunately,
this will never happen....
