About 8 or 9 years ago my son and I worked a CQ 160 SSB contest multi-opr.
I was logging and he was operating. As I entered the calls on the screen,
he gave them reports and I put the reports in the computer. Sometime in the
middle of the night he nudged me and said "I haven't heard the last three".
Ears make the difference.
I believe that years ago in hamfests there used to be a contest to see who
could copy the weakest signal. Winners sometimes copied signals well under
the noise.
Also, since I got the 599zx, I'm beginning to see that the better your
ears, the less you gain with DSP.
