[CQ-Contest] Emergency power

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Emergency power

I'm interested in installing emergency power for my CONTEST station (and
for some other essential home services).

I understand the rationale for a transfer switch, but most of the systems
I've seen "insist" on doing the transfer on a circuit by circuit basis,
rather than transferring the entire service from power line to generator
power and letting me manage my power consumption to stay within the
generator's limits. Is there a reason under the NEC for doing it this way,
or does it have more to do with the cost of the necessary switches?
