There is also the phenomenon of the way the transmitting station "zero beats" you. A local ham consistently checked into a couple of local SSB nets high in frequency. We all tried to find the problem with no sucess until I was at his shack one night. It was time for the net, so he fired up and called in...almost 1 kHz high! He was tuning for a "natural" sound for *his* ears.
