If the band is packed with stations, and I can barely find a hole to
run in; I'll run with cascaded 500Hz filters. If I'm trying to break
a maddening pileup on a very weak multiplier, the 500's plus cascaded
250Hz filters can make all the difference.
If I'm running and the band isn't jam packed, I'll use SSB filters
for RX (2.4kHz) plus my 'secret weapon' -- an old MSC "Smart Filter"
SCAF audio filter. With the SCAF I can vary the AF passband continuously
from 2.4kHz down to ridiculously narrow. Of course, there is still AGC
action in the IF passband. If things get tough, I switch back to the CW
crystal filters. I use the SCAF all the time anyway to act as a low
pass filter for the hiss produced by the lame IC-761 AF output stage.
Lessens the fatigue factor considerably.
