There I was late one night, sitting in my shack with the warm
phosphorescent glow of vacuum tubes bathing my almost naked body. With
sweat glistening on my body from the exertion of the last 47 hours of
the 48 hour, Multi-Multi, Super Wide Band, Ultra-friggen High
Frequency, 48 meter contest. I shift my buttocks to try to work out
the wedgie I've obtained in my "Fruit of the Loom Golds" from sitting
on this stool so long. As I gaze around the shack with a lusty glint
in my eye, I carefully adjust each dial for maximum performance,
hoping to land the "Big One". There is an Island off the coast of
Eastern Slobobia called "Wakka-Wakka", and there is reported to be
only ONE operator on it. His gear is old and quite low powered, but at
this time of night, during this season, on this month, when Jupiter
and Mars are in phase, and when the yellow bellied spitting frog sings
his song of love from the swamps, I just might get the signal to skip
just right!!! I tilt my head just so......to carefully listen to the
chosen frequency........waiting. I try the bait!!!! DA-DIT ,
DA-DA-DIT, DIT-DA-DIT-DA. I lean back, eager in anticipation that the
bait will produce a nibble. Faintly.............I hear something in
the background. DA-DIT-DIT-DA-DA.............. AHA!!!!!!!!!!! I've got
a nibble!!!!!!!! I try again..........DA-DIT-DA-DIT-DIT-DA..........
Faintly, almost imperceptibly the reply comes back!!!!!!!!!! He's
taken the bait!!!!! Oh My God....I just gotta
"Workem".................I try to set the
hook.............DA-DIT-DA-DIT-DIT-DIT.....................The reply
comes back
slowly.......DA......DIT..........DIT..........DA....ALRIGHTY-THEN
HE'S MINE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M GOING TO REEL HIM IN!!!!!!!! I am
a radio
JUGGERNAUT!!!!!!!!.................................DA-DA-DIT-DA-DIT-DIT.............I
hear his reply clearly
now..................DA-DIT......DIT-DAH........DA-DA-DIT.........DIT-DA-DA-DA-DIT......I
decipher the code and come up with BLRETHYOP!!!!!!!! What the hell is
that!!!!!!!!!
One block away, unknown to our beloved HAM a small child is
experimenting with a "Radio Shack" Power Rangers
walkie-talkie...........................Haphazardly banging on the
code button............
