It is actually called the USB, for Universal Serial Bus. TYAN and ASUS have
these ports already built on their motherboards and have been shipping them
for atleast 6 months now. I have seen about a dozen with them on it.
You are correct, the idea is to change the serial port structure and make it
work more like a bus. Similar to how Apple Desktop Bus on the Macintosh
works. You will be able to get better throughput and have the ability to
daisy chain devices. This technology is good, but some view it as a band-aid
to the inherent IRQ problem in the PC's processor.
