I, too, have had difficulty with computer controlling my Kenwood
TS-940S CONTEST radio with an IBM Clone and the K1CC KIY universal
interface.
I tracked the problem to "operator error!" I must somewhat
sheepishly admit that, in my haste to get on line, I was not paying
close attention when I inserted the 5 pin DIN plug into the back of
the TS-940S. The keyway on the plug does NOT prevent you from
inserting the plug incorrectly. I found that the DIN plug can be
inserted in almost any rotation with reference to the radio's jack.
As a result, Pin 1 could be on Pin 2, Pin 2 on Pin 3, etc...!
BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU INSERT THE DIN PLUG INTO THE BACK OF THE
TS-940S!
I no longer "feel" for the DIN plug to "fall" into the jack when
connecting the KIY interface. I pull out the radio, look at the
keyway on the plug, look at the keyway on the jack, match the two
keyways by sight (not by feel), then insert the DIN plug.
This method always works, though it requires a bit more effort to pull out the
radio and turn it around to view the back panel.
I hope this helps!
