I wonder would 'testing' (Oooooollaaaaaaa, one, two) our microphones
(outside a contest, of course) annoy them as much as their rubbish
annoys us? Mmmm, might be worth a try to see what the response would
be. Then when they get really angry, just say 'see you in the contests'
and QSY.

I am collecting reports on 15" monitors. I am interested
in their suitability for contest stations. Most
important is how much RFI they put out. Also important
is if they are susceptible to RF or magnetic fields.
Contesters don't have the option to turn off the computer
while operating.
I would like *SPECIFIC* model numbers. Your fellow
contesters would like to buy monitors based on your
reports. It may be true that an entire brand may be
good based on a single model, but most people would
not like to bet $300-500 on it.
Summary of 15" monitor survey so far:

There was a thread on 17" monitors, but I am interested
in replacing my 15" Acer 56L monitor. It has too much
rf coming out the front, plus one of the guns is starting
to flake out.
Could you let me know what 15" monitors you like and
dislike for contest use? I am most interested in
rf susceptibility and noise generation, the features
hardest to evaluate at the computer show.
I'll post the results at the end of the week.

P.S. The NEC MultiSync XV15 I borrowed from
work is pretty quiet, but pretty expensive.

I have a packard bell VLMF... it might not radiate as many of those harmful rays
that kill your eyes, but it sure stinks on rf. I have done just about everything
one can do to cure it (paint inside with metalized paint, etc) but to no avail.
I now have it set up far enough away ~2-3 feet, that it isn't getting to the rig
now, but boy what a pain to read and operate during the contests.

I use a SAMSUNG Syncmaster 15GLe....crisp display, never any RFI incoming,
but maybe a little bit of a RFI generator, but not bad at all....

I sure would like to know what you find. The emi/rfi output is especially
key. Got A input from local guy that Sony has less emi/rfi as its power
supply is shielded internally. Not sure if valid, so would like your summary.

Perhaps you get what you pay for. After enduring several "economy"
Chinese monitors that generated noise and regularly blew flyback
transfomers, I bit the bullet and bought a NEC Multisync XV15. It sits
right next to my TS930S and is pretty damned quiet. I already had an
older 17" NEC on my Macintosh, 3 feet away and loved it. Good display,
sturdy, no problems. The industry people I have talked to have a simple
refrain: there is NEC, there is SONY...and there is everyone else.

While operating Q power in the SS SSB, I was able to work a few
people by calling CQ on 14228. I think I was too weak for the
average SSTV station to hear me, but I did get some contesters
to come back...

One would be better served by stating something along the
lines of.....I am convinced that a GREAT QRP operator is
just as good as a GREAT QRO operator !! This statement
may be supportable.
Operating QRP requires many DIFFERENT skills, not better
skills, than operating QRO. Moreover it is probably
true that most great QRO ops honed some QRP-low power
operating skills early in their ham radio contesting
careers. Those QRP skills are CERTAINLY useful in
contesting in general, because among other things,
there are times when propagation is such that QRO makes
no difference and behaves like QRP.
The top QRO operators are superior operators, and to
state that "proficient QRP" operators are better than
their QRO counterparts, in general, is not provable
and is not true.

Thanks for the "nice" response. I'm sure glad that we did the "right" way
for 99.999999 percent of all contacts. In the late 70s....almost all the
top gun contesters were omitting the call...saying, "455 B 12 Ohio" I
really didn't hear very much of this on the air this weekend. But, we have
to have someting to talk about here on the reflector.

I had an SSTV interlude during SS also. I had been living in harmony
with the SSTV crowd for over 3 hours. I was at 14234.8 while the SSTVers
were at 14230 and 14233. I would occasionally hear some SSTV signal get
into my passband but nothing objectionable. And none of them came up to
complain to me. Then someone in PA called to say he wanted to run SSTV
there and that I should move ("It would be the courteous thing to do").
I relayed to him the hours of harmony until he came along to which he
replied "I'm done talking to you, idiot. Take some of this". Followed
immediately by 40 over 9 SSTV. Another ham came on to say that the ARRL
band plan shows 14230 - 14236 was reserved for SSTV. I checked the ARRL
web site after the contest and it only mentions 14230 (bandplan.txt).
I tried to work some more through the SSTV but ultimately had to abandon
the frequency.
By the way bandplan.txt says the 80m SSTV freq is 3845.
