Like many of you out there I maintain a PacketCluster node
for my fellow contesters and DX-ers. Also, like many of
you I received a new callsign yesterday. My question is:
Does anyone know what I/we have to go through to change
the node configuration to support our new calls? If I
remember the node callsign is hard coded into the .exe
file and is not user changeable. (A fairly effective
form of copy protection in this case.) If I need
to get a new version of the software, who do I have
to talk to?
Thanks for your help....

Oops... I was doing some late night editing of the TR web page and I would
up blowing away the KA9FOX home page. All is fine now, so if you've got a
new vanity call, please enter it into the database at:
http://www.QTH.com/ka9fox
Click on "Vanity Callsign Announcements"
It works now... really!!

Message-ID: <199611061522.JAA29175@home.nts-online.net>
A couple of weeks ago we were able to get
a lot of rolls of 1/2" CATV Hardline (72 ohms) that
is brand new on the wooden spools WITH connectors.
It sold so quickly that lots of guys didn't get any.
I was able to get 12 additional rolls yesterday and
I think this will be the LAST that will be available.
This is brand new unused cable that will make
great feedlines with very low loss.
Price is $125 per roll plus shipping to your
QTH. Normal UPS charges will run about $35-40 per roll.
This is really a great deal, about half the loss of
RG-8 yet less than half the price.

Saturday night on 40M was hopeless for me, running QRP, in VT. It was
noisier than I ever remember, probably some faraway storms. I only
managed 12 Q's!
80M was also noisy and long. Instead of the usual East coast feeding
frenzy, most good signals were the same stations I had just worked on
20 and 15M. There were a lot of LOUD Europeans at the low end of the band.
I tried 160M and signals sounded fine, but the selection was small. I worked
all 3 of them. If or when we get lemons again, let's try 1.810.
>From the window in my shack I can see both VE2 and NNY on a clear day, but
I missed both of them. The bands were just too long, I guess.

I remember making this same mistake early in my contest
career. Even more embarrassing was getting into an
argument with W4KFC about it during the contest. The
exchange went something like this:
>CQ SS DE W4KFC
K1JYN
>K1JYN QSO B4 CQ SS DE W4KFC
K1JYN
>K1JYN QSO B4
NOT ON THIS BAND
>YOU CAN ONLY WORK ME ONCE DURING THE CONTEST CQ SS DE W4KFC
Then I went and read the rules!
Look at the bright side, Andy. You, as well as I, will never
make this mistake again!

Hi Gang-
Last night, while playing around inside my 765's, I checked out an idea
I've had, especially since working all the split EU's on 40 in the last
CQWW.
I changed the baud rate on the rig interface from the factory-supplied
1200 to it's maximum 9600 baud. Of course, I changed the rates in
CT to match.
Result: The rig interface is MUCH faster! For example, I think it used
to take 0.5-1.0 seconds to set a split frequency at 1200 baud. At 9600,
the display just barely flickers and your done!
Maybe many of you have already tried this.
On the other hand, if I keep giving away my secrets, I'll have to beat
you with skill alone...

I would suggest looking into a bargain 286 PC to run Geoclock or a similar
"gray-line" program.
Many companies that still have those "clunkers" would probably be glad to
give them away so make friends with your LAN guys at work. You might even
get a 386 if you're lucky.

I don't think it can be done without some very sophisticated software,
which
would probably cost more than 3 or 4 new PCs. You can use 1 PC to drive
2 monitors, but your best bet would be to have a small window in the
logging program which displays the grey line. Logger, by N6BFM does this
and you might ask him. ( n6bfm@avana.net) BTW "Logger" is a general purpose
program, not a contest type....but what a program...It tracks Sats, shows
footprints, grey line, can connect to 3 different packet system ( HF,
VHF, and Telnet ) simultaneously. Bob uses a cute trick for the grey line
which really makes it incredibly accurate. He told the program the Sun
was a Sattelite revolving around the Earth!! Incredible. Maybe he would
make it available as a TSR.

I AM GETTING A LOT OF SCORES WITH NO POWER OR CLASS ON THEM!!!!!!!
THEY ALL GO INTO THE HIGH POWER OR B CLASS !!!!!!!!
This is the first posting and since I got scores off internet and also
off 3830 itself a score may be on here twice. Just let me know if yours
is and I will take the incorrect one off.

Konichiwa (sp?) to my friends in JA!
My friend, KR3I, will be operating KR3I/C6A this weekend during the JA DX
contest.
He is eager to work some serious pileups so please look for him and spot him on
your DX Clusters.

Greetings fellow contesters,
Just a quick note to express my appreciation to Jim Reisert, AD1C,
for maintaining the various ".CTY" files (that I use with CT). During
the
CQ WW SSB contest, the country files were accurate and out of 667
QSOs, the program never failed to identify a given call sign / country
combination. My thanks to Jim for a job done exceedingly well, IMHO.

Subject: FCC Computer Correct?
Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19961106213449.006647a0@aloha.net>
Notice that, somehow KD6VWK got authorized
7 vanity call signs: WR6J, AW6QC, AE6J, K6TT, W2JR,
W5JR, and K6HF. These are issued under the club name
of "Ortega Wireless League." Can one club have 7 calls,
or did the FCC computer give him 7 of his choices on
the application instead of just one?
Incidently, as you may have suspected, per QRZ, his
initials are JR! The one without these letters, K6TT would
be an especially valuable call, I think, to a real contester.
I was lucky to get my third choice out here; of the calls on
my appliction, about 10 were issued to Hawaiian hams
on Day1! Someone else even got KH7DX, it was about
5th on my list, the call I got was #3 on list. My first two
choices were 2xT Hawaiian prefix's; TT was further down
the list, not assigned yet.

The long awaited Delaware QSO party will re-emerge on 2/1-2/2/97.
I have a file describing it but with all the trouble I am having on the
reflector, e-mail me and I will send it to you.

Can anybody suggest an interface source for Dunestar Model 600 filter
and Yaesu FT990 transceiver. I've also got Ameritron RCS8V remote
antenna switch. Hope Dunestar filters help reduce TVI as well.
