Subject: FT-1000D vs. 1000MP
Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19961014203307.006ae9e4@aloha.net>
Am about to buy a FT-1000D, loaded with all options,
filters, tuning mods, etc. Will pay a few hundred more
than for a new 1000MP. Please tell me I am doing the
correct thing for: a QTH with no other nearby RF of any
sort, no other contestors or serious DXers within several
hundred miles (Big Island 350 mi SE of here); very low
noise level as there is no industry here and power lines are
underground in the immediate neighbor area. High tension
lines are a few miles North. Front end overloading is not
a problem.
Principal problem is that Europe is directly over the North Pole
from Kauai, and everything is a few thousand miles distant in
all directions, save for Midway, Kure, Johnston, etc and the
other islands of Hawaii! In fact, except for South America,
Australia and Antarctica, the rest of the world is in the upper
half or the polar plot around Kauai, and a long, ways away.
So receiver sensitivity is very important here, along with excellent
filter performance to separate out a lot of rather weak signals.
Part of the weak signal problem is my own lack of big antennas
only a tribander and wire dipoles, but do have them for all nine
HF bands. Do have an 87A and XMatch tuner. DXing is my
highest priority followed by contests.
I know there have been previous posts comparing the rigs, and
believe I have chosen well in going with the used 1000D.

Actually, it worked quite well - and very selective. The beam heading
was quite critical for the toilet to respond...

Message-ID: <20994.9610142120@earl.encore.com>
All contesters are invited to the October 22 meeting of the N.C. branch of
the Potomac Valley Radio Club (PVRC). This will start at 19:30 at the W4ATC
club station of the Student Amateur Radio Society (STARS) of North Carolina
State University and will be a joint PVRC/STARS meeting.
The upcoming CQWW and Sweepstakes contests will be discussed and we hope to
have a video of the construction of the W3LPL multi-multi contesting station.
Directions:
---------------------------------
Approaching NCSU on Hillsborough street from downtown Raleigh:
Turn left at Pullen Road (at the Bell Tower), then turn right at the
NCSU "Visitor Information" sign. Go through the gate, follow the curvy
road to Daniels Hall at the intersection of N. Yarborough and Morrison.
>From the West (Beltline) on Hillsborough:
Pass the 10-story NCSU Library and Pogue street then take the next
possible right at Horne st. Jog a bit left through the entrance gate onto
Broughton st and you will be going South and slightly downhill. Daniels
is at the corner of N. Yarborough and Broughton.
-----------------------
Parking permit rules are lifted at 5pm, but avoid any spot marked with
an individual sign (like handicapped, reserved, etc.). The club station
is in Daniels 428 and all outer doors should be unlocked. Parking may be
a little tight at that hour, but you should be able to park in the
right hand lane on Hillsborough at Horne, opposite Mitch's Tavern and
Caribou Coffee.
There will be a talk-in on the W4ATC 145.130(-) repeater. Contact Jim Price
N3QYE for more detailed directions (jwprice@unity.ncsu.edu, home phone
919-821-5576).
(The NCSU club is on the web at: http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/stud_orgs/w4atc/)

Does anyone have a shop or service manual for an older IC-720 that I might
get duplicated in some way.

Subject: SS Off Times for W8
Message-ID: <199610142337.TAA06719@vixa.voyager.net>
Hello Fellow Contesters,
I'm about to dive in to the madness we fondly refer to as Sweepstakes, both
modes this year. (single operator QRO)
In the past I have found these two events to be the best domestic contests
AND the most grueling test of my station, contesting skills, and endurance.
I'm sure this year will not be a disappointment in this regard.
Deciding when to take off times has been one of the weak points here.
Looking over my previous logs I see the off time decisions were not very
well executed.
Can any of you more experienced SS operators share advice with me as to when
to take off time in these events in these sunspot deprived times?
How about when to be on a specific band? Maybe this year SS will be mainly
held on 20 and 40....this simplifies band changes some. hi
I will only be using one radio as I have not yet graduated to full bore
two-radio contesting.
Thanks in advance for your replies. Hope to work you all in the Sweeps!
73,
Bruce
