Here is the synopsis of my sloper question. I appologize for the omission
of what bands I was interested in though it didn't seem to matter. The
resonse were great and it has set me on the course to using the Lazy Vee idea.
Here is the breakdown:
A. Traditional sloper - 5
B. 1/4 wave sloper - 3
Original ideas:
Lazy Vee - 3
Bow Tie - 1
I converted my existing traditional sloper into a Lazy Vee and played around
with moving the bottom in and out while listening on the receiver.
Amazing......
In the traditional position the 0's were S9. Moving the leg in dropped them
to S4 but allowed me to hear a VE1 that wasn't audible at all before (S5+).
I'm now in the process of building the othe 2 Lazy's.......

The Cuba Libre Contest Club - well, two of us at least - will venture to
the far reaches of the south eastern Caribbean to the beautiful isle of
BARBADOS for the CQWW SSB contest. Yep, we'll be mixing them
rum and cokes with a whole new crowd this year and we couldn't be
happier!
Last month Vic, KI6IM, and I accepted the gracious invitation from Jack,
K3KG, and Steve to join them in a serious (hey, it's only a hobby) Multi-
Single effort from their contest station 8P9Z. 8P9Z has long been a
top scorer - they were top M/S in the ARRL SSB test this year - so we
thought we would learn a few tricks from the experts and have a great
time in the contest. Besides Jack and Steve are going down early to get
the antennas in shape and, in general, to do all of the heavy lifting. All we
have to do is the computer stuff and churn and burn them Qs. Heck of a
deal. Oh yes, we'll do our chase the multiplier stuff too.
So what about V31DX? (Over) development on Ambergris Caye, our
Belizian QTH, has eliminated our second tower and the famed beached
steel barge that formed the base for our 80 and 160 meter verticals.
We're left with just our original 75' crankup with a tribander, a 2 el 40, a
broken rotator, and a single Butternut vertical. The beams are fixed north
until the rotator gets replaced. Good enough for a competitive score in the
ARRL but decidedly uncompetitive in the CQWW. We expect to return
next March for the ARRL SSB test with new tricks and techniques learned
from our friends at 8P9Z.
Rumors that we are looking for a tugboat to tow Barbados slightly south for the
three point multiplier are slightly exaggerated. Do you think a case of rum
sent
along with our score will have the same effect?
This contest collaboration happened because of the communication facilitated

I am starting to get QSLs out for the stack I received from the IOTA
contest. NA076 is not terribly rare, but rare enough to generate almost 20%
of our Q's as direct requests. Those who enclosed a provision for return
postage will see their cards first.
I'm surprised how many people sent SAEs without provision for return
postage. Even from Europe. I'm considering sending all these through the
bureau, despite their obvious desire that their card be sent direct. I'm
sure I'll feel bad about throwing away those envelopes, but should I? I'm
also considering sending domestic cards (those that didn't provide SASE)
via the domestic bureau at a cost of 5 cents each versus the 20 cent
postcard rate. Any comments?

I usually had pretty good experiences when getting ignored by either
"blunt" or "contesting" to communicate with Dave Sumner by letter, asking
why I was being ignored. I usually got a response quite quickly; I
recommend this approach based on personal experience.

A few years ago while shopping in Target I found some black nylon string in
the sporting goods dept in the fishing section. The string was coated with
some kind of waxy substance. It turns out this stuff is GREAT for holding
up ends of dipoles or other outside antenna projects. It's very strong and
after 6 years is still holding up.
BUT... now I can't find it again. Any of you fishing types KNOW where I can
get this stuff (not substitutes please)?

RF Applications is now selling a SWR protection box. It monitors your SWR
and if the SWR is high enough (preset positions) it will break the amplifier
keying line to the amplifier.
No matter how hard I try, I still manage to transmit in to the wrong
band/antenna during the course of a contest. At $129.00 for this box, I
figure I'll make it up in a few years by not having to buy new tubes.
