RST seems fine as part of the exchange, but how about making it an
HONEST RST. No 599 unless it's truly deserved!

How's about "Tour d' Band?" The winner(s) will receive the coveted yellow
jersey with the sponsors' names plastered all over it.

I can use 40 and 80 meters .... in the local magazines I have
seen the ad for the GAP Titan DX .....10-80 meters.
Has anyone had any experience with GAP or other verticals
that can help me ...... I really like the R5 .... but would like to

Subject: Keying circuit
Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19960819133038.00707894@southwind.net>
Ladies and Gentlemen.....
I am looking for a simple circuit to use +12 volts from my TS-850's
accessory pin to key my amplifier which uses +12 volts to key the relay. I
do not want to use the internal relay in the TS-850S cause I don't want all
that "clacking." I used a circuit before using a optoisolator and a
transistor, but there has to be something that is a little less complex. I
can build the circuit again, but I lack the time. Need something sweet and
simple.
Can someone point me in the direction of a recent QST article about such a
device. I think a simple transistor could do the work, but I am pressed for
time at work here and have very little time to research the subject. I am
moving our whole hospital's computer system (a UNIX box and five Novell file
servers) this week.
Thanks for the information

Count me in! I favor the complete grid square as the exchange, no RSTs,
please--they'd all soon become 5NN anyway--, and points for distance and low
power. CW only. This could become a REALLY neat contest. Also, the name
Topband Distance Challenge appears perfect.
With regard to sponsorship, what's the problem with a group of contesters
doing it? If the group needs a name, that shouldn't be such a major obstacle.
The period between the ARRL 160 and the CQ 160 contests has been kind of a
dead spot. The new 160 distance challenge certainly would enliven that. Why,
I might even snort some more helium even though this be a CW event. Anything
to improve my signal.

Message-ID: <1.5.4.16.19960819103925.21971182@epix.net>
This is a big problm with mobile antennas not just garrage doors but also
trees! I had a nice homebrew top loaded design that worked very well but
got destroyed by tree branches and also one very low overpass.
So what is the mobile contester to do? How can we get a fairly high
preformance mobile antenna that is also structurally sound?
This is important when out activating counties and islands durring the
various QSO partys and IOTA tests. You are no good to anyone if you cannot
be heard and as you say they are expensive!
I have been using a home brew base loaded design on a spring with a
stainless steel whip section for the top. Fairly low cost under $75 to
build the system and extremely strong. It is down about 3 db from the top
load design this due to the coil being benieth the roof level of the car.
However when I hit tree branches they just get trimmed. The down side is of
course having to get out of the car to change taps.
The coil was wound using #14 wire on a 2" PVC pipe about 16" long the taps
were added via experimentation. I get good results from it and have used it
in some DX contests like WAE and Scandinavian Activity test. I always enjoy
being in a contest while on the road.

OK but stations on the receiving end should get extra points for taking the time
to pull the low power and QRP guys outa the noise.
stations using less than 200w and QRP get a multiplier on their total score but
must sign
" /LP" or "/QRP". "/LP" qso's count double, "/qrp" counts quaddruple on the
recieving
end.
I agree with Bruce on the participation factor here as well.

Hmm. Come to think of it, a Clear-channel AM station - WSB (750 kHz) has
its 50 kW transmitting site located in the parking lot of a shopping
mall. (In all fairness, the transmitter was there first!)
I wonder how they'll possibly meet the new specifications on RF exposure.
Hmm.
(You can go out in the parking lot at get within 100 feet of the base of
the transmitting tower)

How about no 599 allowed at all?
or
No 5NN - has to be 599...
Brian, K6STI, mentioned something that I thought was interesting -
ZIP codes..
So, here is my modest proposal for the Topband Distance Challange
exchange -
Call sign + REAL signal report (Ns not allowed) + Grid Square +
ZIP code
Exchange would look like: NM1Q 559 FN41 06267
As to scoring, how about one point per Q, one point for complete
grid square, one point for ZIP code (gives some flexibiity for
those who are "point givers"), then the distance multiplier?
So the max points per Q would be three, minimum one (a point
for just making a QSO) times distance -
What do y'all think?

4. 3 power classes; QRP (5w), barefoot (150w), w/amp (1500w)
5. scoring - based on distance, details to be worked out
6. name - I can think of no better than "Stu Perry Sprint"

Well, I don't operate SSB (you mean you can talk into these things?).
Never noticed it on other than RTTY either...harder to notice...
>>Better
>>be careful! If your neighbors get wind of this, you may be first to test

Yeah, well it is a Catch 22 (so to speak): RF field near ground is
higher with low antenna, but City requires it be low (35 ft).
Gotcha comin' and goin'.
Not to open a whole bag of worms, but my understanding is that the
new guidelines are frequency dependent. On 40m, even full legal
shouldn't be a problem even on RTTY, right?
[antenna is KLM 40M2A shorty forty]
I suspect the "radiated" RF is entering the shack through an unused
antenna due to the direction anomaly mentioned. I use a Dunestar
6-way relay, so the other ants should be grounded? It is beyond me
I'm afraid.
Actually, I have no other RF problem in the shack even since I went
QRO and I routinely operate RTTY, listen to the FM stereo, and talk
on the cordless phone all at the same time.
>>73's Brian and thanks for the SARTG qso's!
>>DE AL KD8FS
Yeah, thanks, but I am serious (for once). The WM1 wattmeter has a
remote head for sampling and then has box with meters for display.
It is called a "computing" wattmeter and as such requires 12v and
contains various analog op amp stuff in the display box... There is
an open area on the back (i.e. no metal there). So there is:
1)wire from remote head
2)12v input
3)hole in back
4)other I'm not aware of???
Anyone else ever have this trouble or know of a better wattmeter for QRO?
(I would prefer display of both PWR and SWR in all modes simultaneously, no
knobs)
Please, let's hope I don't become the near field poster ham!

Hello Fellow Topband Contesters,
I feel compelled to post my thoughts....hope you find this interesting.
I prefer to have two chances to work JA! A second chance at Europe or
elsewhere is very desirable. Please make this possible.
I agree that 12 hr. off times, during daylight hours likely, allow some
rest, honey-do projects, ant./equip. repair etc. I hate to sit by the radio
waiting for another W8 to answer my endless CQ's, a real waste of time, almost.
Start times.....dunno what would be best for all involved. Friday evening at
about 00 Z works for me. Can't always take off Friday afternoon to get
ready. The contests that start earlier make it difficult to get home, eat
chow, and get the station fired up in time.
Maybe 24 hrs. of operating time total out of 48 hrs. with off times a
minimum of 12 hours would work. Would be nice to have off times as short as
an hour, but I don't want to be compelled to call CQ in daylight hours just
because my competition is.
Not in favor of having RST in the exchange.
In favor of the contest name "The 160M Distance Challenge"
In favor of full four character Grid ID.
In favor of higher points per QSOs over longer distances.
In favor of DX window at 1830-35 that is enforced some how.
In favor of using the State/Province/Country in the exchange, to assist in
getting the WAS and other award chasers involved.
In favor of allowing paper logs, not every contester in the world has a PC.
In favor of some point advantage for low power/QRP.
In favor of numerous categories of entry, SO, SOA, MO, MM, M2, MOLP, MOLPA.
In favor of prompt results publication. In favor of prompt issuance of
certificates, plaques, and trophies, mugs too.
In favor of club competition.
In favor of allowing non-contest windows in the WARC bands....hi
In favor of this format replacing ARRL 160M and possibly CQ 160M CW contests.
Well, I have enjoyed following this thread and I look forward to seeing this
new contest become a reality.

I would vote for the same 42 hour total with the start and stop times used
by the ARRL 160 and CQ 160M contests. I always found that this was ideal for
working two nights of the contests and still having Sunday off for doing
things with the family.
I have been in many 160M contests where one night was real bad and the other
night came back with excellent conditions. If you cover both nights, you
don't have this problem.
I really like the basic concept of distance scoring. So please don't limit
the hours of this contest by making it a mini-contest. That will remove a
lot of its appeal. This contest might become a better contest than both the
ARRL and CQ 160M contests unless we turn it into a sprint. Then it will be
too different to be considered in the same category.

If they are not in the contest then get their state or country. Then use the
closest grid square in that state or the closest grid square in that country
to you. Then you get QSO credit and your score for the QSO will NEVER be
more than it is supposed to be.

With all the reference to distance from one's grid square and reporting
thereof, how 'bout "Tour d' Band?" The winner(s) receive the coveted
yellow jersey (polo shirt?) with the sponsors' names plastered all over
it.

Tree and all,
It seems that a twenty four hour time period is a given,
but I agree that any "from/to" period would seem to work
to someone's advantage - I've spent a couple of hours
doing some basic calculating and that's the way I see it.
But, consider this - you only work 16 of the twenty
four hour period - your operating times will then become
an individual operating decision forced by the clock.
I think that would "even" out the playing field.
Does this make any sense or am I missing something?

Not accurate enough. My wife and I changed our FCC address from New York to
Texas back in January. We got our new licenses back long, long ago and our
addresses are correct in the FCC data base. However, Buckmaster shows the
correct address for my wife (KU2Q) but shows my address incorrectly as still
being in New York. Several E-mails to Buckmaster hasn't help the situation.
At least it hadn't a couple of weeks ago when I last looked.
Also, the locator in Buckmaster has my wife's location as being about 8-10
miles away from where it should be. That's enough to cause inaccuracy
between grid squares. I suspect they use the post office location for the
locator.

Tree's idea is that if a guy passes you anything but a grid square then
you get the minimum QSO points possible regardless of the guy's QTH. I
like this idea because it doesn't put a tremendous amount of preasure on
anyone to find out the guys true grid square.
BTW... for the rules... You MUST log what the station sends you as an
exchange. Anyone "coming up" with a grid square and entering it after the
contest will lose additional QSO's if discovered.
The idea is that the contest is over when the contest is over. Nobody
should feel compelled to do work discovering grid squares after the
contest. What a pain.
