Thanks to people that gave me any suggestion abut my ne FT 1000MP. You can
remember that first question was about FL 2000B + ra
dio, second was Heil Proset audio level with radio, and finally, the
"transmission"! !
Well, all was Ok, but not the transmission. 1000MP is now with repairman in
South part of Brazil, with unbelievable problem. St
op to key just one month after
bought... I wrote letters to Yaesu USA and Japan, and as soon as possible,
will talk about possible answers. And, of course, let's wait for repairman
analysis. We don't know what happened with 1000MP...
All was OK, receiver is fine, AT working nice, and suddenly, no more
transmission. If you know same situation and have any suggestion, send
to me...
Despite of this problem, FT 1000MP is "dream radio"!!
Thanks for all friends that wrote to me, and hope cu sn, maybe
during IARU contest (will operate with my old TS 140S)

Another great one leaves us... Morrie Shepard W7LVI and trustee of the
WWDXC W7FR call. passed on about 10 days ago.
Morrie could always be counted on for a QSO in just about every contest. He
wasnt hard
core in the last 20 years, but could always be found on the band giving out
a contact to
anyone who was trying hard !
I cant recall one contest from any place Ive been, that didnt include W7LVI
-AND- W7FR in the log.......he was extremly loyal the Western Washington DX
Club gang, and made a special
effort to find any member who was trying for a good score. You might think
he was just one
of hundreds that get on for a casual run up and down the band, but to me and
the other
WWDXCers he was really special...
So now having given up my secret, 2 QSOs for the price of one........I will
fall back into the
pack score-wise, ..............back to where I first was before I knew
Morrie....

Some rumours have appeared in DX Bulletins so here is the story:
The VooDoo Contest Group is now optimistic that plans for Togo
will succeed. We hope to operate multi-multi in CQ World-Wide CW
Contest on November 23-24th. After our first-place wins as 9G5AA
('94) and TY5A ('95) we are aiming for a third straight win.
We have requested the call-sign 5V5A. The team consists of AA7NO,
G3SXW, G4FAM, GM3YTS, K5VT, K7GE, KC7V, N7BG, W6RGG,
WB7SRW. We will establish six stations and 17 antennas in Lome,
the capital of Togo, with increased efforts on LF antennas. QSL
Manager is again Bill Ferguson, GM4AGL. The trip will include
road journeys to collect equipment stored in Abidjan (TU) and Accra
(9G).
We also hope to operate with personal call-signs just before the
contest on WARC and maybe 160 metres.
More details will follow, including the address of a remarkable

Introducing The First *** WIRE ANTLER CONTEST***
The first Annual *** WIRE ANTLER CONTEST *** will be held on 20 July,
1996. Basically, the Test is in two parts:
1- Build a 10 Meter antenna, using ONLY wire and rope. The maximum length
of wire to be used shall not exceed 140 Feet, excluding the feedline
and any length necessary for insulator wraps, solder joint & other
mechanical connections. Designs could be Dipole arrays, Collinear and/or
Broadside arrays, Wire Beams, either Yagis or Quads, Long Wire arrays
[ within the 140' total ], Wave antennas or unique designs of your own!
Pre-exsisting antennas may be used, providing they meet the definition
above. Stations operating with Antlers outside of the definition(s)
above will be listed as Check Logs, and their participation will be
acknowleged in the final results.
2- The OPERATING phase will be a Sprint-style operation, on 20 July,
1996, from 1900 GMT to 2300 GMT on TEN meters, SSB, from 28.300 -
28.500 MHz. Maximum output power shall not exceed 150 Watts PEP.
Scoring will be QSO's x Multipliers, with Multipliers being States,
Canadian Provinces & DXCC countries, per the ARRL DXCC list. QSO's
are of equal value (1-point each), and logs shall be reviewed by the
Brockport Amateur Radio Klub, [ BARK ], and the Contest Committee's
decision shall be final.
Contest submissions shall include the Operator's Name, Call, full QTH,
equipment list and a DETAILED SKETCH of the ANTLER, including the
installation elevation, (height above ground), with all dimension
delineated clearly. Sketches shall become the property of the Brockport
Amateur Radio Klub, and will not be returned. The top 5 stations will
receive, in addition to the Certificate, a copy of ALL the antenna
designs, with credit given to the Originators, and a copy of the
submitted designs will be made available to all participants for a
nominal fee, plus our shipping costs.
Logs shall be postmarked no later than 31 August, 1996, and shall be mailed
to the address listed below. A Certificate of Participation will be issued
to all Entries, and shall indicate individual Standing in the CONTEST.
Please include either a LARGE SASE, or $ 2.50 for postage & handling.

I've tried it both ways and prefer to get the call correct or nearly so
first. I have often wondered how much this hurts my rate and suspect that
it's a killer. However, it seems like when I don't get it right first
before sending the exchange, it just causes more problems. I'd sure like to
hear experience on this one from others too.
Any tips for handling the weak (read S0-S3) callers that sound like a mass
of nonsense tones? I finally found (in the latest ARRL CW DX Test) that I
can concentrate on a lower tonal pitch and pick them out better that way. I
would estimate that the tone that works best for me is in the 350-450 hz
range. I can hear the higher freq tones okay, but I don't seem to be able to
lock on to them like I can the lower ones. BTW, my age is 53 and so far I
haven't noticed any hearing loss - HUH what did you say? What is your
experience?

Pete, there is good news and there is bad news about this technique. On
marginal signals or in heavy QRM, it invites the other station to log you
without your getting your report from them. ie, you might ask for a repeat
and he'll be gone.
I always get their callsign first then go into the "report mode". This also
helps keep the rythm..other stations know that you will not give reports
without getting their full calls.

Bob,
This is the same intermittent error that both of my 87As get. I have
isolated the problem and told ETO about it but the word doesn't seem
to have filtered down (all assuming that your problem is the same
as mine).
The fault occurs more often when the amplifiers are first turned on,
so there seems to be a temperature coefficient aspect as well. (It
was even more prevalent when the amps were located in the old,
poorly heated shack.
My power line voltage is high--nominally 248-251, which is within
spec, barely, but enough to cause the error 24 code. I think
one of the monitored voltages has a HIGH limit a little too tight,
combined with a bit of a temp drift in the monitoring circuits.
Since both of my amps have the same problem, it seems to be
a design issue rather than a failure.
I run both of my amps on large variacs set for about 238 and I
no longer have the problem. I had sent one of my amps back
when the problem first occurred and Dick even took it to his
Breckenridge place to run it for an extended period--of course it
never fails at ETO or Dick's place--but they both probably have
normal line voltages and are not as cool as my shacks have
been.
I plan on getting the utility to give me a new transformer for the
pole--one that has taps. BTW this was never a problem when
the local distribution was 7200 volts and I had a transformer
with taps. The utility upgraded the distribution to 14,400 and
replaced the transformer with one without taps--hence the high
line voltage.
Maybe the two of us (and others?) can get ETO to raise the fault
limit on whatever voltage is too tight.
(BTW if you aren't at the high transformer tap in the amp you
could change the tap to fix it--but I assume that you are. Try
measuring your AC line voltage with an accurate digital
meter, bet it is high.)
GL and I hope that your problem is this easy to fix. If this turns
out to be the problem you can always do temporary fix with
a 12 volt 20 amp transformer connected as a bucking auto
transformer.

I used a Tow-Tec on my HyGain Hd-70 crank up tower. First raising broke
the main drive shaft and the tower dropppppppped all the way down. I was
running at the time and missed the whole show.
I now use the motor winch now sold by U.S. Tower and it is a brute. No
problems and its brake is a worm gear!
Get a statement from your supplier about the workings of this winch with
this tower, regardless of who you purchase from. I did and good ole Mr.
Tow-Tec sent me money for my damage ref. above.

Apparently, I'm not the only person with DVP hum problems. Has anyone
been able to fix the problem? Would be interested in your experiences.
In case it matters, I run the card on a 486 DX2-66 with 16 MB or ram
(using a 10 MB ramdisk). I have the Harvard Radio Icom cable to my
IC-781. Using an Icom SM-8 desk mike (yes, I'be put insulation under it
to prevent noise from the operating table surface). I think it was
pretty interesting that the "factory" cable for Icom will not support
getting the 8 volts from the Icom radio to the Icom mike. I have to run
a seperate voltage feed to the mike from an accessory socket. So much
for ordering an Icom cable!!!
If the hum problem went away, and if I could learn to talk, it would
sound fine.

Well, Bruce, since you mention it, the FT1000MP has the exact same problem on
CW, although it's not as bad. With the radio set for about 1500 watts
solid carrier out of the 87, if you let it sit for a few seconds, the dit
will produce a spike of about 2kw! I dont think this is terribly risky
diode-wise, but maybe yours is worse, and at any rate, it's certainly not
legal in the strictest sense of the word.
I'm sure Ray is right about the ALC response being the problem. It's a problem
on the MP because it, too, has no drive control! Looking at the ALC meter
with 100+ watts coming out of the radio, the ALC meter is still well over the
"nominal" range marked on the meter!
...and dont even ask about SSB on the 1000MP. After 1.5 hours of playing
with all the knobs, I finally got everything sounding very FB with no
spikes (and the ALC in range), but you can throw the manual away because it's
wrong and the RF Power control with the processor turned on DOES affect the
drive (ie. ALC) reading in this mode. However, the COMP metering for the
processor is WAY OFF. When it reads 5 db (just barely indicating) it sounds
more like 20 or so, and max comp only takes it up to about 15 db!
So for those of you who were complaining about the power set problem on the
MP, that is not a problem. The RF Pwer control on the front panel DOES work.
However it seems to work like a drive control and just sets the knee of the
ALC. For those who are interested, I'm using the 50 watt menu setting to
drive my 87A, and PROC at 11 oclock and MIC at 10 to 11 with a Heil HC4 mike.
Then just reduce the RF Power control to get the ALC into the "green" range
or lower if you want less power. I find 50 watts just right for driving
3cx800 pairs.
Back to the spiking, I did do some on the air tests with the MP and
it appears the attack time is slow enough that it does not cause any
bandwidth problems, but even sending a string of fast dit's will produce
a slightly higher peak power than a solid carrier.
I think it's time for the Japanese companies to clean up their act!
Please take out 3/4's of the bells and whistles (and menus, please!) and
give us a rock solid and clean radio, with a display we can read in any light
condition. This 1000 MP is the best performer on RX I've ever used, but it
is also THE QUIRKIEST radio overall. ...this is NOT your father's Collins!
I thought the FCC had to accept these radios before they hit the street?
Something is breaking down...

This looks like a GREAT piece of software. I am seriously thinking of
chucking AEA's Log-Windows in favor of this. Lousy support with
Log-Windows and label printing doesn't work correctly. Plus, it's a LOT
less expensive!
