ALL SCORES ARE LOW POWER UNLESS NOTED WITH A HP NEXT TO CALL!!!!!
This is my first attempt at the FD scores on here. I did breakdown the CW
and SSB contacts. I feel that this will be the majority of the contacts.
There just is not enough room to break down all the 2,6, 440, pkt, sat and
other contacts. Also not really enough room for all the Bonus pts. I did
not put the hours in since everyone should have done basically 24 hours.
Also I am sorry but I cannot put an op list on this one. Not sure there
would be enough bandwidth in my email if I started listing ops for some of
those 20A stations.
I will take any suggestions on this and if possible I will try to work
them in. Just remember that if I change something it means that I must go
back through all the email and reread them and update the scores. Can be
quite time comsuming.
PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO PUT YOUR FULL EXCHANGE DOWN!!!! 1A,4D AND MO,SF
OR WHATEVER!!

3. Operating Practices
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Operating Practices
Electronic mail is different from packet radio, in that many
subscribers receive their E-mail through commercial services such as
CompuServe and MCImail. In essence, many people are paying for each
byte of every message sent to CQ-Contest. In order to minimize
spurious messages, please follow the operating hints detailed below:
* Make sure there is something of value in each message you send to the
list. Avoid messages that are a complete reprint of someone else's
message, with nothing but "I agree" or "Me too" added to the bottom --
not much value there.

Gentlmen....
I would like to bring to the forum a dialogue as to how we can best serve
amateur radio; which should include users, organizations, regulators, and
manufacturers.
Somehow, we have to come up with a plan which will a provide adequate
solution to all those involved in the hobby and the industry. Failure to do
so will be disasterous (and I will be really pissed if all my equipment
turns out to be CB junk!).
Never-the-less, I am going to try a feeble attempt at outlining some steps
we can discuss concerning te issue of amateur radio, its growth, its
relevancy, and what the "League" can do to help us (thats thier reason for
being!).
First, here are some points of discussion. Remember, these are ideas and
are subject to flames, ridicule, and premeditated malice. All flames go
into trash!
1. Should established amateurs (via clubs or individually) try to make the
time and effort to offer up-grade classes? In my community, we haven't done
that because of expertise and time. (I know there are excuses for
everything) I would like to hear from some of you who are already doing
this and as to the success rate of the class offering. Not only for
General, but for Advanced and Extra as well. (The guys I find who upgrade
are rabid operators)
2. I believe people are frustrated learning the code because they are trying
to do so singularly..or without the encouragement or coaching of a teacher.
Code tapes and computers go so far, but do we need to take the time to
inject the human element into teaching our hobby. Again, are we willing to
spend the time and effort?
3. Encourage people to join the League (I say that because the League does
offer a voice to the FCC). Now then, can we work with the League to make it
attractive to belong to the organization. Who wants to pay 30 or more
dollars a year when you just own a handi-talky and have no interest in
anything else. What can the League offer for less money for those people
who have little interest in organized League functions? How can the League
become relevant to those people who don't care about HF or other esoteric
ham radio operations. QST #2? QST VHF/UHF? Or is it a manor of educating
those people that the "League" is the voice to our government?
4. What can local clubs do to encourage those to join them too? What
incentive do we have? Sure, there is the damn repeater, but is that all
there is? Our repeater is open to everyone, so what is the attraction?
Programs. door prizes? What ever? What makes someone want to join a local club?
5. Manufacturers. Cheaper rigs? Simpler Rigs? Affordable Rigs? Kits?
Also, what about plowing some of the money you get from the hobby back into
helping people upgrade? What can you do to help create a market? For
instance, Cessna is building the 172 and 185 again, but over the past ten
years where they did not build planes, very few learned to be pilots. They
are not starting a campaign to make pilots. Why? To sell planes. DUH!
Maybe thse people can help offset the cost of teaching classes.
6. Testing. Don't "dumb" down the exams, but give these people some meat
they have to learn. Who can draw me a picture of a Colpitts Oscillator? Or
a Tune-Grid-Tuned-Plate? What we need are people who can teach the right
stuff. I am not an engineer...I am by education a social science
major...but I was able with the hlp of some good guys...figure all this out.
Again, it goes back to getting hams to teach hams...where today...one reads
a book and takes the test.
Those are a few things I have been thinging about in the shower. One of the
issues I see for experience hams is that we can no longer sit on the
sidelines and bad mouth the no-coders. We cannot sit there and watch ham
radio dwindle down to nothing, because of our idleness. We need to rise up
off our contesting chairs, and ensure the future of the hobby. I applaud
those who are already out there do that.
Can we ADD to the list? Can we refine the list? Can we start the dialogue?
Best Regards
Lee Buller

But will there be an appropriate MD there to issue medical exemptions for
those who can't handle the code? Might I suggest dr. Bafoofnik in case you
haven't covered this point . . .
I realize the contestants will probably have the required code skills, but
what about the judges, refs, and guests . . . ?
(If Bafoofnik can't make it, maybe Kavorkian isn't busy that week . . . )

I copied this from local packet and am forwarding it to the reflectors.
Ted and the gang have worked very hard and spent a ton of bucks
to go light up these DX locations. Please try to look for them and
work them from as many bands/modes/locations as you can. The
QSL cards will be really neat judging from Ted's past efforts.
If you can, please forward this to your local packet systems so
that the email deprived will have a chance too.
Thanks in advance,
Bruce (AA8U)
P.S. Please forward all email regarding this post to Ted, K8AQM
